Baseline Energy Use

We had an energy audit conducted in March 2022. See our Baseline Energuide Report. Our energy performance was estimated at 185GJ/year, or 0.74 GJ/m2/year, which is 126% worse than a typical new house in Canada using 82 GJ/year!

(One GJ equals the energy from two BBQ propane tanks.)

We learned that space heating uses a whopping 73% of our energy. Water heating 13%. Electrical, lighting, appliances 14%.

Given that heating drives the majority of home energy use in our climate (zone 4) it was helpful to understand where that heat goes. 38% of our heat is lost through the windows (R-0.15), 23% through the basement foundation, 17% through air leakage, 11% through walls (R1.7) and a further 5% through the attic (R-4).

Insulation was the #1 recommendation to come out of our energy audit, followed by window replacement, air sealing and then systems upgrades.
