Air Tightness

A blower door test measures how well the building envelope prevents air leakage. The fewer air changes per hour (ACH) the more airtight the building.

To be honest, I’ve always wanted to observe one of these!

Our house came in at 9.37 ACH @ 50pa. By comparison, the Vancouver building bylaw target is 3.5 ACH, Energy Star homes are 2.5 ACH and net zero homes target 1.5 ACH.

Our 9.37 is equivalent to a hole in the house 2.65 sqft or .25 sqm in size 😲 that explains why we lose 17% of our heat through air leakage.
