Net Zero Energy Certified

It’s official, we received our CHBA Net Zero certification label this week! Big thanks to capitalhomeenergy and twinlionscontracting for handling the paperwork.

So far, we are loving life in our net zero home. It’s super quiet due to thick walls, windows and all the insulation. We programmed our heating setpoints to 15C (low) and 19C (high) and the heat pump didn’t turn on until mid-October. Before that, using the oven or having friends around was enough to warm the whole house. There’s a good amount of fresh air circulating and the fans throughout the house are super effective. Lots of natural light means we aren’t turning on bulbs much during the day.

Our energy monitoring system is working well and has been useful for knowing what’s on when, and testing out appliance-level programming. This month, we’ve been using ~ 27kWh per day (this nearly doubles on the days we charge the car) and generating ~20kWh of on-site solar, ranging from 2-45kWh/day depending on cloud cover. Not bad for fall!
