Roof Design
The current roof is hand framed, with an addition out back ~1970s. Structural upgrades would be needed to support solar for net zero + if we were to add insulation to the existing framing, there were concerns about compression at exterior wall. This pinchpoint acts as a thermal bridge with resulting heat loss.
A thermal bridge is a localised area of the building envelope that is more conductive than the materials around it, creating a path of least resistance for heat. Thermal bridging can be a major source of energy loss in homes.
Our project team advised easier & more cost effective to replace the roof than attempt to overframe or modify, and while doing so, create a profile more conducive to insulation, daylighting, solar & views.
We have worked through MANY iterations on the roof design and are pretty excited about where we’ve landed.
